چکیده

With the advent of collaborative business processes that may include different parties, the interaction means between those processes steadily gains more importance. Despite this issue the modeling of message-based interactions is very complex and errorprone due to the inherent properties of asynchronous communication. In order to alleviate this problem several predefined interaction protocols such as contract-net or different auction types have been defined in the context of multi-agent systems. In this paper it is shown how these interaction protocols can be described in a reusable way for BPMN workflows. The underlying idea is to hide the complete message-based complexity of the underlying protocol specification and allow to employ them in a completely domain oriented fashion, i.e. the workflow modeler is only concerned with initiating a specific type of interaction and fetching the results. For this purpose the ideas of agent-based goal-oriented interactions have been simplified and transferred to the workflow modeling area. The usefulness of the approach is exemplified by an example that illustrates how contract-net negotiations can be set-up.

Galaxy tools and workflows for sequence analysis with applications in molecular plant pathology

The Galaxy Project offers the popular web browser-based platform Galaxy for running bioinformatics tools and constructing simple workflows. Here, we present a broad collection of additional Galaxy tools for large scale analysis of gene and protein sequences. The motivating research theme is the identification of specific genes of interest in a range of non-model organisms, and our central examp...

Towards Open Publication of Reusable Scientific Workflows: Abstractions, Standards and Linked Data

In recent years, a variety of systems have been developed that export the workflows executed to analyze data and make them part of published articles. We argue that the workflows that are published with current approaches are dependent on the specific codes used for execution, the specific workflow system used, and the specific workflow catalogs where they are published. In this paper, we descr...

Architectural Decisions and Patterns for Transactional Workflows in SOA

An important architectural style for constructing enterprise applications is to use transactional workflows in SOA. In this setting, workflow activities invoke distributed services in a coordinated manner, using transaction context-propagating messages, coordination protocols, and compensation logic. Designing such transactional workflows is a time-consuming and error-prone task requiring deep ...

A light modelling framework for e-government service workflows

Businesses face significant obstacles during their interaction with public administrations and governments, having to cope with bureaucracy and ambiguous procedures, a fact that makes e-government a necessity today. Inherent complexity of the e-government application domain is also reflected in the workflows of e-government service provision. This paper reports on how some real examples of e-go...

Constitutive and Regulative Specifications of Commitment Protocols: A Decoupled Approach (Extended Abstract)

We analyze the emerging trends from research on multi-agent interaction protocols, on workflows and on business processes. We propose a definition of commitment-based interaction protocols, characterized by the decoupling of the constitutive and the regulative specifications, where the latter is explicitly represented based on constraints among commitments. The 2CL language, for writing regulat...
